2009 Track Season Introduction

CURTIS TRACK & FIELD 2009
=VIKING TRACK NEWS=

It is almost Track & Field time again. I know you have been enjoying the cool break from the heat of those spring days out on the track but it’s time to begin that diligent training that will bring that League Championship Trophy back to Curtis and take you to the State Championships the end of May.

Remember your goals will be met during the off season, not after the season starts.

This year’s version of the VIKING TRACK & FIELD TEAM will be a lot like the 2008 version. The “BIG BLUE WAVE” graduated many of its top performers on the guy’s & Girl’s teams so both will be looking heavily for returnees to step up and fill the gaps. Add to that the outstanding young talent coming in from the Junior High School and our 2009 team goals will be achievable. Our main goal, as always, is to bring the South Puget Sound League Titles back to Curtis High School. Our DESTINY is in our hands. As you think of this monumental task, that is facing us, remember the PLACEBO effect. If you are convinced something will happen, you will unconsciously MAKE it happen.

WE’RE GOING TO WIN……….YOU BELIEVE THAT!!!

Rogers, Decatur, Tahoma, Puyallup, Spanaway Lake, Todd Beamer, Bethel, Graham Kapowsin & Emerald Ridge all have great teams and will stop at nothing to beat the VIKS. We were once the BENCHMARK that all the teams in the SPSL compared their programs to. We need to return to that lofty perch once again. With this year’s talent, we have the potential to begin that journey. But what makes Curtis standout when the general makeup of all teams is about the same? Our secret is simple and it’s centered around two words that add deeply to the natural talent you already possess. The magical words are DESIRE and CONFIDENCE. Desire is the drive for success. This striving for excellence allows you to “DO THE BEST YOU CAN WITH WHAT YOU’VE BEEN GIVEN.” Confidence is a belief in your ability. It is having faith in your talent and accepting all challenges that test your limits.

WE’RE GOING TO WIN……….YOU BELIEVE THAT!!!

We have several athletes returning that competed at the League, District, or State Championships levels last year and we will be leaning heavily on their strong positive leadership. That leadership will lead to great chemistry, which in turn will lead to CONSISTENCY in practice and meets on a daily basis. We will also lean heavily on new talent and the strong talented group of sophomores coming up from that dominating program at the Junior High.

WE’RE GOING TO WIN……….YOU BELIEVE THAT!!!

My true goal for this team is to start a STREAK of ONES. To accomplish this we will need a maximum performance from each and every one of you every day. Remember, we are only as strong as our weakest link. If we all focus on the task at hand SYNERGY will kick in and amazing things will happen!

WE’RE GOING TO WIN……….YOU BELIEVE THAT!!!

Our mission for the 2009 season is to bring CURTIS back to where it belongs, #1. We must establish our INVINCIBILITY once again. We will do this in three ways 1st by being ASSERTIVE…that means you will take appropriate risks to be successful. 2nd by PERSONAL ACCOUNTABILITY … which means you are responsible for your actions, having a willingness to face up to your shortcomings and to pay the price of trying to correct them. 3rd by SELF-DISCIPLINE…which means you are willing to develop and then stick to your personal “GAME PLAN.” Remember you take a psychological risk every time you compete. You risk looking foolish, losing to someone you shouldn’t, disappointing yourself, coaches, parents, & friends losing prestige. My response to you is we need athletes who view pressure and crises as a challenge, not threats, as opportunities to test yourself under difficult conditions.

WE’RE GOING TO WIN……….YOU BELIEVE THAT!!!

Please take care of your physicals, fines, forms, etc. See that everything is current and up to date for the season. Make your appointment with Dr. Feel Goode right away. You can get all the forms in the Athletic Office from Mr. Jenks or Mrs. Nygaard. The forms are very self explanatory. You should know that Dr. Feel Goode is a cousin of Mr. Rogers….he is harmless!
Remember your goals will be met during the off season, not after the season starts.
